Every driver has their own methods and beliefs on how to maximize gas mileage. It isn’t easy to know between fact or myth when it comes down to fuel efficiency. So let’s take a look and clear up some fuel-saving tips that don’t really work.
Myth #1: It is more efficient to roll down the windows instead of using A/C. This ideology does vary depending on speed, but air conditioning compressors have become more efficient over time. They don’t seem to affect how easily the engine can push the vehicle forward as much as it used to. The consensus is it is better to keep the A/C on when driving at highway speeds and windows down when cruising through the city.
Myth #2: A higher level of octane will yield higher mileage. Most vehicles will take gasoline with octane levels between 86 to 91. The higher the octane level, the more steady your fuel is. Many people believe the myth of higher octane gas yielding better mileage, but that is not the case. Contrary to belief, the engine and components of the car might run more efficiently, but it does not always translate to a higher MPG. Besides, it is best if you purchase the octane level of gas that your manufacturer recommends.
Myth #3: Running on empty hurts your engine. Some people believe that running on a low tank will allow more sediment and other harmful debris to enter the engine. While there are some cons to running your gas to the bottom of the tank, long-term engine damage is not one of them. Your vehicle is designed to extract gasoline from the bottom of the tank to keep a constant flow. The truth is: operating a low tank will not be damaging your engine.
Myth #4: Your tire pressure can dramatically increase/decrease mileage out of a tank. Tire pressure does, in fact, affect your fuel economy. However, is it a notable amount? Not really. According to the US Department of Energy, your fuel economy lowers by only 0.4% for every one psi low a tire is. In other words, if your tires were eight psi low, it would net less than 1 MPG loss for the majority of drivers.
